Community-based Goat Rearing Programme (CbGRP) to improve rural livelihoods in Bangladesh
The project, implemented by the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh will be implemented in a community level in two villages: Bhelanagor and Rupasdi, under Brahmanbaria district. These two villages are densely populated and have diverse structure of agriculture well integrated with livestock and other crop production. The project location is situated 60 Km south-east from capital city of Dhaka. The project location is characterised as that people engaged in agriculture are mostly smallholders, marginally land less, poor and risk averse. They are potential once those smallholders are ensured with necessary inputs and support services. Given the condition in favour of smallholders, this project will be suited with the existing socio-economic condition of the community where the project will be carried out.
The objective of this project is to strengthen the community capacity to increase income and to improve the rural livelihoods and poverty reduction via goat production. The method of “revolving fund principle” will be applied. Fourty (40) households (50% women) will be selected and given a female goat with 2-3 kids. The associated training on good management practices will be provided. The project will bring all those poor families into a position to ensure food security at household level and enhances the community empowerment and thus poverty will be reduced significantly in participating farm families.
