Reducing rural poverty through the promotion of small livestock
In the District of DAVIE-ASSOME, where populations predominantly agricultural, the people are severely affected by poverty and their activities impaired by climate change impacts. This project, being implemented by Actions en Faveur de l'Homme et de la Nature (AFHON) aims to improve the living conditions of community members particularly women and fight against sustainable poverty through the promotion and strengthening of groups, training on good agricultural practices for adaptation to climate change and the promotion of family farming. Diversifying their sources of income will increase the economic power of farmers and thus reducing their poverty and contributing to reduce the community’s pressures on local forests.
The main objective of this project is to fight against the poverty of rural households in the Canton-DAVIE ASSOME by strengthening their capacity to adapt to climate change and promote the breeding of pigs.
It will:
- Gather the farmers in farming groups to facilitate their supervision and extension of knowledge of climate change adaptation;
- Strengthen the ability of farmers to adapt agriculture to climate change through training on good agricultural practices (crop rotation, crop rotation, use of improved seeds and agricultural inputs, use of early maturing varieties and drought-resistant; fertilizing plants adapting crop calendar) and dissemination of appropriate technology for small producers to reduce their vulnerability;
- Promote the combination of breeding pigs to agriculture;
- Strengthen knowledge of pig farmers and veterinary assistants of these groups.
