Batukuta Village, Lombok
This project will provide support for the development of a freshwater fish project with the Bukti Tani Farmers Group from the village of Batuka, District of Narmada in West Lombok. Batuka village is known as "Water City" and has a population of nearly 3,000. In its first year this project will support 15 families to develop livelihoods based around the production of fresh fish in the Remeneng Kodeq river. The fish are reared in cages, known locally as Karamba, which are made from bamboo or other freely available material found around the village and are suspended in the river. Locally available fish species will be raised for up to 3 months before being sold in local markets.
Each karamba can hold around 600 juvenile fish which, at harvest after 3 months, are equivalent to about 1,500kg adult fish. So, over the course of a year, each karamba will yield about 6,000kg of fish.
Profits from the sale of fish will be spilt with two thirds kept by the karamba owner and one third to the Butki Tani Farmers' Group to help them with costs and to expand the fishing enterprise on the Remeneng Kodeq river.
