Coffee Washing Station Project
From Rwanda Village Concept Project ‘s work in Nyakagezi village in the District of Gisagara, it has been noted that general income rarely stretches to cover basic health and sanitation needs such as soap, mosquito nets and school fee payments. Following a needs assessment of the situation it has been ascertained that the construction of a coffee washing station will contribute to the poverty alleviation in the targeted community, empower the beneficiaries and contribute to the improvement of health conditions of the beneficiaries as well as to the social-economic status.
The coffee washing station plays an important role in the coffee processing and offers various benefits:
- Economic benefits: Production of high quality “fully-washed” coffee of better commercial potential (a kilo of ordinary coffee can get around 2 USD while a kilo of fully washed coffee can get 3.5 USD at the export market, in addition to the coffee of specialty, which is not affected by price fluctuations)
- Organic fertilizer: waste products at the washing station can be fermented and transformed into fertilizer, which can be used in coffee fields or sold for various usages in different various plantations
The project will work under Rwanda Village Concept Project (www.rwanda-vcp.org)
Rwanda Village Concept Project (RVCP) is a non-governmental, non-political, voluntary organization run by students at National University of Rwanda. It is linked to other Village Concept Projects worldwide through the International Student s Association of Village Concept Projects. The overall goal of RVCP is to provide sustainable improvement in the health and living standards of underprivileged communities at Village level and to develop the skills and knowledge of participating students.
This project aims to construct a coffee washing station in the Gisagara community (Nyakagezi Village), in the sector of Gisagara, Gisagara District in the Southern Province of Rwanda.
That coffee washing station and the training of 273 members of this local community will be used as a platform to support the 273 members of Nyakagezi cooperative who are interested in coffee farming. The major goals of this project are to provide a new income scheme for the work of vulnerable coffee farmers in the community and to alleviate poverty through the training and support of local people in the practice of fair trade coffee growing.
